If you had to guess at even one, you're running your company on a guess. On the call, we find the real answers.
A maintenance company should bring in about $175,000 a year for each field worker. For landscape and install, it's about $200,000. I talk to hundreds of owners a year, and those numbers hold. So 25 guys doing $3M should be doing $4.3M or more. We start with that gap.
What not knowing costs you
You keep adding guys and trucks, but the bank doesn't grow. For those 25 guys, that's more than $1.3M a year that never comes in.
Most owners tell me they keep 20 to 30%. When we look, it's 8%. You'll see your number next to two marks. 10% is the least you should keep. 18% is what the best-run shops in the network keep.

You think you keep 25%, so you buy the new truck. At 8%, that truck comes out of your own pocket.
Count every call, text, and "got a minute?" from your crew in a week. Each one pulls you off the work that grows the company. That's sales and marketing, which bring in new clients and new hires. When you're on the phone with your crew, you're not selling, hiring, or checking jobs. Your company can only grow as far as the time you have left.
Think slow mornings loading trucks, or overtime that gets no work done. Think jobs that grow while the price stays the same, or mowers paid for out of savings when your bids should have paid for them. It's never one big thing. It's a lot of small holes in the bucket, and they drain it.

Who does the review
I started my landscape company at 19 and ran it for 35 years in Altoona, PA. We did installs, hardscape, and snow. I hired hundreds of guys.
